The Roaches and Hen Cloud - April 2018

As somewhere we visit often you will see a number of walks for the roaches on our website. This one in particular is our usual route, it's nice to get up and get in the views but not too long or difficult to get back. It's a great early morning, late day, bad weather or even just a steady walk.

The route starts as all our Roaches walks do on the main car park, rather than the usual way up we head over to hen cloud and across the field to the climb, it's not the most challenging or steepest but it's easier with a good pair of boots on. Eventually when you reach the top you are greeted to wonderful views out past Tittesworth reservoir and have views in all directions. We walk back down from Hen Cloud the way that we came but once through the field at the bottom carry on straight up the side of the Roaches

Continuing on leads you across the ridge leads you to doxy pool, a lovely little pool permanently sat on the outcrop, this is a great place to grab some photos or some food before heading off across the rest of the ridge. The terrain here varies between sand, grass, mud and rocks. You never need to scramble but a couple of times it helps to place your hand on a rock to steady yourself.

As you gain height over this mixed terrain you get some amazing views out and eventually are met by a trig point to show the top of the roaches. From here, it’s a short walk past the trig point, down some steps to get back to the main road. Continuing on will lead you to Luds Church, but to keep the walk a bit shorter we turned left and headed down the road. It's not a busy road, and the views are diminished a bit here but it does allow you to pick up some pace.

Eventually this route leads back to the car park without too much effort. If you fancy a more challenging return you can always come back over the way you came but it's sometimes nice to have a round route with a different view.
